Quote:
The subliminal self, Poincaré says, looks at a large number of solutions to a problem, but only the interesting ones break into the domain of consciousness.

Mathematical solutions are selected by the subliminal self on the basis of “mathematical beauty,” of the harmony of numbers and forms, of geometric elegance. “This is a true esthetic feeling which all mathematicians know,” Poincaré said, “but of which the profane are so ignorant as often to be tempted to smile.” But it is this harmony, this beauty, that is at the center of it all.

Poincaré made it clear that he was not speaking of romantic beauty, the beauty of appearances which strikes the senses. He meant classic beauty, which comes from the harmonious order of the parts, and which a pure intelligence can grasp, which gives structure to romantic beauty and without which life would be only be vague and fleeting, a dream from which one could not distinguish one’s dreams because there would be no basis for making the distinction.

It is the quest of this special classic beauty, the sense of harmony of the cosmos, which makes us choose the facts most fitting to contribute to this harmony. It is not the facts but the relation of things that results in the universal harmony that is the sole objective reality.

You have a very good memory Valis. I used to be on TSG for sometime but later stopped going there as I didn't like it there anymore. I have rarely interacted with anyone there so it is a surprise you remember me.

OK, people I couldn't find the quote but I did get the pictures from the book. I will upload them when I get back.

Get un-used to it for you are definitely not a freak.
Don't know about the cows you mention but I know you like math and hope you
may have seen my math joke post earlier but if not, here's another one you will appreciate.

There are only 10 types of people in the world —
those who understand binary, and those who don't.

My other formula has 1 = 2 and this one has 10 = 2.

Also, 5 out of 4 people don't understand fractions and about 90% of all yahoo
answer-ers don't even understand the question.

Very nice. I can't speak for other countries but in America Math and English
are the most important subjects to learn, comprehend, and retain.
The 3 R's have always been the cornerstone of lower to middle education.
Read'n, Rite'n and Rithmatic are foremost followed by science, biology,
history, geography and the rest. PhysEd a must and some language and music.
(hopefully by the 4th or 5th grade the 3 R's can be spelled properly.)
